: Welcome!
: guidematic November 30, 2009, 08:14:41 AM

Welcome to the new Cadillac in Southern Ontario forum!

Here we hope to get together owners of Cadillacs and LaSalles in Southern Ontario and in the central United States. For now this will be an internet based group, however as time progresses, I hope to include some activities where we can get together and meet one another.

For now, please be patient with me as I am not too terribly internet savvy and this is a new venture for me. I will learn and improve the board as time moves on.

 Thank you for joining!

 Your administrator,

 Mike Jones, aka guidematic

BTW don't forget to use your ROTY-A for your avatar - hopefully the USPS doesn't drop the ball here west of the Rockies and you are getting a complimentary Jiffy Pop too.

If not for your massive shipment of Cadillac jewelry there wouldn't have been any awards this year.

You are my hero big guy, "Master of antique Cadillac Disaster" repair and resto. Only guy I know that has a shoe phone - marone !

Welcome Skyhawk,

My buddy Cliff retired auto mechanic, he used to have a Cessna Skyhawk.

Told me he worked at Chaplan Cadillac Olds in Falmouth , ME. back in the 50's. He's seen it all.

: billandlori December 21, 2009, 10:00:49 PM
Hey folks!!

Bill here from Stratford Ontario. eh%

New to the Cadillacs but I've been a gear head my whole life.

The project is a 1955 Series 62 four door. The original engine is mostly missing so we have a 472/500 engine and T400 trans to go in. The floors and rockers are going to need a bunch of work but the body is very solid and all the trim is there. Should be a nice cruiser!!

Bill

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic December 22, 2009, 06:48:02 AM

 Hi Bill!

Welcome to our little group! Geez, you're just down the road from me too!

A 472 in a '55. Man that will be a nice runner! Got pics?

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: billandlori December 22, 2009, 08:24:31 AM
Thanks!!

Its pretty tough right now, but it seems to be a good starting place!! It sat in grass for years and that ate the floors. It still has original paint!!!

: Re: Welcome!
: billandlori December 22, 2009, 08:50:35 AM
I have the wife's 72 Nova in the garage now, just needs paint. We have just started our own business in July and the cash is a bit tight right now so the project is on hold. I am hoping to get some colour on the Nova before summer though and then start on the Caddy.

I have a better front bumper but the rear bumper end have the usual rust through. WOW are they pricey!!!

Bill

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic December 22, 2009, 08:55:19 AM

new business, eh? what are you doing? I can understand that cash is tight, but once you get going, that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, those rear bumper ends are a lot of $$$. They were very common to rust through, given the acids that the exhaust contained back in the old leaded premium days.

 Mike

That's a nice looking Caddy. You sure have your work cut out
for you, but that will be a very nice ride with a 472.

Hello Everyone! i'm from Kitchener, my name is TJ, i am 24 and i just bought my first Cadillac and i'm proud to say it is a 1982 Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance. i have loved these kind of cars since my childhood because i grew up around them. i am just so happy to say i own and drive my very own now! bananna'

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic February 12, 2015, 10:23:49 PM

Congratulations TJ! You will love the car. There is nothing like a Cadillac. I say, once you go Cadillac, there is no going back.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. And be sure to tell us about your experiences with the car!

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: Jon February 13, 2015, 06:15:28 AM
Welcome aboard TJ, I've known your 82 for quite some time so I know the bones to that car are good (at least the waterpump should be good  ;D). I was going to pick up that car for my wife to use as her grocery getter but she fell in love with a Roadmaster Wagon before GJ was ready to sell.  She's got a few bugs to iron out but that's the fun (and sense of accomplishment) of owning an old car.

: Re: Welcome!
: EXCRUISERGUY February 13, 2015, 11:31:51 AM
Yea, that water pump is still nice and shiny!
It has a new heater core in it as well, I'm going to miss having a blast furnace in the car in this weather.

Right off the top of my head, TJ will be needing a new grille. Jon do you still have that spare one?
He will also be needing a radio for it, if anyone has or knows of anyone with the symphony sound radio let him know.

I also agree that once you've had a Cadillac you won't want anything else. I'm on my 3rd one.

GJ

: Re: Welcome!
: Jon February 13, 2015, 12:36:30 PM
I've got the grille and probably a spare radio, but warmer weather will be needed before I test it.

Now i just have to figure out how to make the binging stop!!

That's what I was thinking too. If all looks good I could send the parts back with GJ. I've also got to dig into my records to see what I paid for them.

Now i just have to figure out how to make the binging stop!!

I have a hunch that it is coming from the radio as the audio for the alarm goes through that circuit.
Putting in a new radio might cure it. If I recall correctly the radio stopped working right around the same time that the headlight alarm problem started.

GJ

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic February 13, 2015, 05:05:46 PM

The alarm is stand alone and doesn't go through the radio. There is an alarm module behind the dash that will need to be disconnected. I'll have to have a look in my manual when I get a chance for the location.

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: Jon February 13, 2015, 05:14:41 PM
I've got a grab bag full of parts that I think contains an alarm module. If you track it down and get pics I can compare.

: Re: Welcome!
: Young One February 14, 2015, 10:33:58 AM
if i find the alarm module can i just disconnect it for the time being? or do i have to replace it right away... im wondering because i have to boost the car every morning to get it out of the shop and the alarm is the only stand out thing i can see killing the battery.

: Re: Welcome!
: Jon February 14, 2015, 11:42:23 AM
That car has a drain on the body fuse.  It's a short to ground somewhere.  GJ and I worked at it just long enough to trace it down to the body fuse but didn't have time to explore it any more.
If I were you I'd pull the body fuse if you're not planning on driving it for a while.   It will disable the power locks, interior lights, cigarette lighters and a few other items.  When I had an 80's Buick that had the same problem I just rigged up a switch in the wiring that let me turn the circuit off whenever I left the car, and turn it back on when I got in.  tracing that drain will involve some methodical disconnecting of accessories and wire connectors while watching the drain to see when it stops.   The most likely culprit is the door connector in the driver's door, but that's just a guess.

: Re: Welcome!
: Young One February 14, 2015, 01:21:43 PM
hmmmm ok i will have to figure what im gunna do then.

when you hit reply and get the big white box to write in, scroll down to "additional options" and click, then click on browse and upload your photos.  The pics have to be below 750 kb (so compress your pics if they're larger) and only 4 per note.

If you have more questions, just ask.

Hey everyone,
I purchased my Fleetwood just over 3 years ago. I recently started going to some of the show and shines in my area. (I'm from Mississauga) It's pretty rare that I see any other Cadillacs there. However I met a couple other Cadillac guys in my area. I got to know John and Clayton over this summer. They were at the Doon show with the black 56 and 57 limos. They were the ones that told me about the show. Any of you that were there will be able to recognize me by my crazy hair lol.  I really enjoyed the show, it was really nice meeting so many people that were so knowledgeable about these cars. I look forward to seeing you all again, hopefully before the summer is over.

: Re: Welcome!
: Ronnie August 25, 2015, 06:00:39 PM
Geeze, he beat me to it.
I spoke with Jeff on Sunday and he was pretty upbeat on joining. He told me that he felt all alone at car shows, usually being the only
Cadillac there, until he met the owners of those black limos. They told him about our club and the Doon show and he shows up in that
sweet 1980 Desert Frost Firemist beauty with only 37,000 on the odometer. Outstanding !
You can begin posting things anytime.

Welcome Jeff  rock:on

I actually have some pretty cool pictures of some other Cadillacs that i took over the past few summers that you guys might enjoy. All local cars that are plated and driven on the road, and all pictures were taken by me. I will upload them in the pictures section soon.

: Re: Welcome!

Hi
I would like to thank Cadillac in Southern Ontario for their warm welcome, and a special thanks to Sam. My name is Jamal and i'm 58 years old and I have lived in Dubai for more than 20 years. My classic car hobby is one that I got from my father and I bought my first classic car when I was 30 years old. Throughout my time in Dubai, I won a lot of trophies and I was known for my enthusiasm for the classics -namely the Cadillacs, and my greatest priority was having an original car that's in great condition (which is a trait shared by many in the classics community). Since 2012, I have been in Mississauga, and true to my nature,I am a simple person that likes to meet similar-minded people and enjoying our hobby.

I look forward to seeing you in any coming event.

Jamal Salam

: Re: Welcome!
: Ronnie September 12, 2015, 03:12:44 PM
Welcome to the club Jamal. The '59 is gorgeous. The cars in Dubai, they were your cars as well ?
Unfortunately the classic car season in Southern Ontario is almost over, at least the season for the annual shows is. I'm sure there could be
shows further afield you could attend but you would have to look for them and you might have to do some driving to get there.
There are still a lot of local weekly cruises left. Search them out and get yourself noticed. The '59 is sure to draw a crowd.
One thing you can do is to get yourself a subscription to the "Old Autos" newspaper. In the back of the 2nd section is a list of all the shows
and weekly cruises and it is updated in every issue. That's what many of us use to plan our cruise season.

: Ronnie September 13, 2015, 04:28:36 PM
I'm all for a meeting as well. When do you want to do this, and why can't we do it somewhere in the middle between London and Toronto ?
Your place is a long drive for Joe and I in Hamilton. Jamal is in Mississauga and Jon is in Oshawa, both major trips.
The few physical meetings we've had were at that restaurant down the street from Doon in Kitchener and there's lots of parking there.
Also, what does Mike and Gareth have to say about it, it's their club ? It's ours too but they founded it.

RON

I can't resist - didn't know we losted it   =rofl=

Sure, Kitchener works.  Do they gave a good brunch type restaurant willing to put up with old fogies talking cars?  I would love to get the Eldo out for a good long drive.  It was fun going to the GM show!!   thumbs up

It might be past Gareth's bedtime right now as he gets up at stupid o'clock for work.  AFAIK Mike has stepped back from the club for personal reasons.

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic September 16, 2015, 08:24:32 AM

Although I have been away from the club, I have been following the posts here.

I had suggested back in early August that we have a meeting to discuss certain things. I still agree we should do it. There are things that need to be put into place and/or changed. This is a good venue to do so. Also, I think the meeting should be held somewhere where it's convenient for most. It seems Kitchener is most central. I do agree it's easy for me. I have a location in mind that is right off the 401, easy to find and they have excellent food.

Previously, our meetings were held on Saturdays, but it became apparent that that day was difficult for many of the members to attend. I would be willing to hold the meeting on a Sunday if it would be more convenient for the majority of the members. Typically we would all meet at 11 AM, break for lunch, then finish the meeting. Is that format still acceptable?

Maureen has agreed to be secretary. She is no longer working so she can be there and take on that responsibility. Also, we need a formal treasurer, Maureen has also agreed to take on that responsibility. We need a proper ledger and account of the funds we have. This is paramount, and should be available to all club members to see.

The date I have in mind is Sunday October 25. How does this work? I await your responses.

As of now I am willing to take on all responsibilities to assure this club moves forward in a constructive manner.

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: Ronnie September 18, 2015, 06:58:38 PM
I was thinking about the upcoming meeting and had a thought......
What would you all think about us having 1 or 2 social get togethers during the year ? Because our membership is scattered all over the map the
the only interaction we have with each other, other than Doon, is thru the internet. Most of us have never met other members on a face to face
basis. One could pass another member on the street and not even know it. I have talked to other Cadillac owners about joining our club and they
tell me they are already members. That doesn't seem right to me.
There are probably 15 or 20 members who live within a 100 mile radius of Kitchener. I'm sure there are decent restaurants in the KW area with
a small dining room. If we prepaid $20 or $25 each they could do up a nice sit down meal with a drink or two for us. All we would have to do is
show up and have a good time. We could shoot the breeze about our cars, have a short meeting on club business etc. Wives would be welcome
as well. Some of our wives have already met at Doon and they might enjoy getting together again.
This would take a bit of planning to get off the ground but I think it's worth a thought.
Is this something worth thinking about ?

RON

: Re: Welcome!
: 57chevyowner September 18, 2015, 09:03:02 PM
 thumbs up

We don't need a formal meeting to get together.  Ronnie has the right idea.

Sam

: Re: Welcome!
: 57chevyowner September 18, 2015, 09:05:41 PM
Oh, and don't forget the Plunkett show - I mean, where on earth could we see more Cadillacs in 1 day, eh?   $sun$

Sam

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic September 18, 2015, 10:34:15 PM

Exactly. We do need more social events throughout the year. Somewhat less regimented that attending shows. Even at our own show we get little time to chat, much less at length. Good idea Ron!

Personally, I don't like formalities. A casual get together, in a relaxed atmosphere would be just fun. Certainly there would be some talk about club business, but without the strict adherence to a schedule.

I look forward to it. Now, so far we have agreed on a date? Was the location OK? And we'll dispense with the formalities. Sorry, I was thinking of a meeting like we have had in the past.

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: Ronnie September 19, 2015, 06:22:30 AM
I apologize for forgetting to mention Fleetwood when I said we only see each other at Doon.

If this idea for a social event catches on then some planning and strategy needs to happen first and should be discussed at our meeting on
Oct 25.

RON

: Re: Welcome!
: EXCRUISERGUY September 19, 2015, 11:55:18 AM
Many car clubs have weekly get together's at a restaurant or coffee shop to talk cars only.
Formal meetings are for board members only and annual general meetings all members are invited to for elections and to discuss the past years business and future activities.
Having a monthly get together that rotates from region to region may also be a good idea.

GJ

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic September 19, 2015, 01:30:32 PM

In the Model Club I belong to we do pretty much the same thing, only we have time for club business at the beginning of the meeting. Then it's all social. We rotate around to different members homes each month. It's a formula that has worked very well for us for more than 20 years.

That is something we could also do. I'd like to just kick back and talk Cadillacs. Solid for however long we're together. That's what I like.

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!
: Ronnie September 19, 2015, 01:58:42 PM
These socials don't have to be in a restaurant every time. Most public parks have picnic tables and BBQ's under shady trees.
Bring your own food and a couple of pop-ups and we're in business. If we all drive our Cadillacs then we can have a mini car show as well.

RON

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic September 19, 2015, 02:18:05 PM

Over the last couple of weeks Maureen and I were talking pretty much the same thing. Only doing a tour, even if it's a short one. I had mentioned that I was tiring of shows and that I got so mucch pleasure from just driving the car. Then we could stop at a nice spot, have a picnic and a social. After that we could do whatever. That would be a lot of fun.

 Mike

: Re: Welcome!

Hi Guys, Yes it's an Elegant. I went through it yesterday on the hoist and did not find any thing significant in the way of rust. Runs well, mostly everything functions well. It was owned for 27 years by the proverbial little old lady, sold a couple of times over the next  10 years and treated pretty well. I'm in Oakville   Ontario   and look forward to driving it next spring. Daily  driver is a 99 STS and of course my reliable  2500 Sierra .  Glad to see others in the area. Ray

Which engine did the Sevilles come with?

: Re: Welcome!
: Geeray December 19, 2015, 10:24:18 AM
Olds. 5.7 ,

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic December 19, 2015, 11:12:08 AM
Cadillac bought Olds 350 longblocks from Oldsmobile and fitted them with the then new Bendix Electronic Fuel Injection.

The fact that it runs well is awesome. When they ran the way they were supposed to, they were smooth, powerful and very responsive. One thing I find odd is that it doesn't have True Spokes. That was part of the Elegance package.

I already started a thread on my project '55 and am glad to already be seeing some input from you guys (thanks Jon & Mike)
I'll fill in some more info as time goes by & show some pictures of my cars as well.
I'm also wondering if you guys hold any meets? you can always find me at the swap meets this time of year & always into talking shop if anybody's interested.
(Ancaster was excellent this past weekend if anybody went?...)

The '55 is my first Cadillac, but not my only ride by any means. I'll be bugging you guys for help on Caddy info a lot this summer I think,

...Thanks in advance! lol

Hi Nate, Welcome aboard.
We do hold quarterly meetings, but since your fairly local perhaps some of us could meet for a few beers and a bench racing session.
Our next big event will be at the Fleetwood Cruise in. Also check out our thread on the Doon Cruise In, which is open to all makes and models but it is our club annual show and shine.
I'll look forward to seeing your project in the flesh as well.

Good morning Bobby!  Welcome to our "home".  I see you are pretty tech savvy - nice pics of your ride!

Feel free to explore the board - lots of interesting technical advice already available.  There are no "dumb" questions.  I once had to ask where my battery resides on my '06  -uh-

If you want to easily track answers to your questions; or are interested in a particular thread, use the "notify" button at the bottom of the post.

Where do you live, Bobby?  Retired?  Working?  Hobbies?

: Re: Welcome!
: Big Jim August 12, 2017, 11:39:10 AM
Hello and thank you for allowing me to join this forum.
I live in Toronto and I have been a Cadillac owner for only just over 2 years.
I found a very nice looking 1970 deVille in Hanover by way of kijiji. It is a solid car that was sold originally at Addison on Bay in Toronto and has spent t's entire life in Southern Ontario. I had to some mechanical work but the body was very good. My baby is white with a white top and red interior and is all stock other than the true duals with Thrush Turbo mufflers and polished chrome trumpet exhaust tips. It sounds like a cigarette boat going across a lake from 45-55mph. I have already won 3 awards at shows. 2 for best open top 70's and 1 for best 70's car. If it didn't have the red interior, it would be identical to Boss Hogg's ride in the Dukes or Hazard TV show.
Since I am retired, I get to go to a lot of car shows. I have already logged more than 15,000 miles since July 1, 2015 and would have hit many more if the weather had cooperated this year. I have included a few more pics of my baby showing the top, interior and some shots I had taken at night.
Hope you enjoy them.
Jim

HI, not sure if I'm doing this in the right spot or not as I'm not to savvy when it comes to forums.   I just joined the group today.  I currently own a 1969 DeVille convertible. I owned a 1969 Coupe De Ville in 1978 and the only thing wrong as far as I was concerned was that it wasn't a convertible.   I acquired this Cadillac in August of 2016.  It is pretty much original, as you all know repairs, modifications and chroming is expensive in Ontario.    Since I bought the car I have had the transmission rebuilt, new Air pollution pump, new 100 amp alternator, new rad, 18" Fosse wheels, also running a newer model Pioneer radio as mine doesn't work, and got some pin stripping done.   I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a purist as if I had the money i would go totally radical with the car.... haven't figured out how to add pictures yet so that will have to come later

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic September 28, 2017, 08:19:27 AM

They were used as early as 1965 on California bound cars. In 1968 and 1969 all 472's had it. It was eliminated for 1970 (except California cars), then was back for 1971.

Hello to all Caddy lovers:

Special thanks to Mike and GJ for encouraging me to join your group and supporting our first annual "American Luxury Cars on the Grand".

Thanks for the welcome and let me extend an invitation for you to get together with other American Luxury Car owners with a similar love and passion for their cars on Sunday June 23 at Ruthven Park on the Grand River, Cayuga, registration fee $10.

The 1500 acre Ruthven Park estate on the banks of the Grand River showcases the Thompson Mansion built in 1850 which is open for tours. It is a fabulous luxury mansion from an earlier time, and a great backdrop to the fabulous luxury cars that will gather here.

More to follow later.

My bio: I've been a car nut for years and currently have a few toys. Have to admit that I still lean to power, like my 500 HP 95 Mustang. That's why I'm Carbuf 95. Now more than ever I lean towards luxury end. My 88 Cadillac Brougham D'Elegance is an example with a hi output LT1 with 4 speed auto that allows the Caddy to pick up the front end and move big time. Heavy duty suspension, lowered just a little for nicer handling, plus a host of other mods.

Carbuf95

: Re: Welcome!
: guidematic April 05, 2019, 07:16:59 AM

I'm dying to see the installation of the LT1 in your Brougham. Yes, I bet that car will get up and dance! A far cry from the 140 HP in my '87 Brougham!

: Re: Welcome!
: 81 BENY Biarritz December 01, 2019, 08:15:01 AM
Hello and thanks for the warm welcome.  I have an 81 Triple red Biarritz that I purchased last fall from Winnipeg off Kijiji with 140k on it.  It is originally an Alberta car and I took a chance buying it sight unseen, just from the pictures that the owner had sent me,  but so far I have been lucky and very happy with it.  I have already met Ron at Ruthven,  Brad Gedge at the Zurich Bean festival and both Sam and Brad at a late summer cruise night in London that was my car's first long road trip. I had seen Sam's beautiful red 81 and also Brad Gedges blue one at the Fleetwood Cruise this year and was hoping to catch up with either of them, I did achieve that, so it has been a great first year now with my car.  I live in Burlington and am an engineer so I really enjoy learning about the technical details about this model and the V864 engine in particular that is in my car.   I have an original dealer parts manual for all 76-81 Cadillacs now so if anyone needs help with a Part # for their car let me know.  The picture attached is my car after it's first cleanup before Ruthven early this summer.  If you look carefully you can see me driving out in the Ruthven video during the awards ceremony,  so in some ways my car beat me to the club forum.  Dave

Porter

Thanks Porter, as for the black wheels I do have the original wire spoke hubcaps but just haven't put them back on after I had taken them off for it's safety inspection.  I noticed that the spoke caps have a number of small dents around the outside edges and they weren't the easiest to get off so they are a tight fit and I only want to take them off and put them back on as few times as possible.   I also wanted to get them cleaned up before they go back on but just haven't had the time.   Kinda like the black look though also so I haven't been in a hurry either to get back to it.
Last summer I picked up a set of used cast aluminium Touring Coupe style wheels from a local guy that are in decent shape, they just need to be refinished, and also just found a set of NOS center caps for them.  When I finally get a set of new tires for it they may go on the car instead.  Might even paint the accent colour red for a custom look but that will also be sometime in the future when I have more time and hopefully more money for it.   Now I am looking for the original style chrome lug nuts to go with them.  Does anyone have a good picture of what they looked like?   Dave
