Title: 2018 FCCI Show
Post by: 57chevyowner on January 13, 2018, 10:04:50 AM
It's official, the show is on again this year.  1st weekend of June as always.

This year I will be working with our local club and helping with parking.  Last year Steve gave $8,000 in our club's name to 4 local charities of our club's choice.  Our little club Strathroy-Caradoc Cruisers (~30) raised over $24,000 for local charities!  If any CISO members wish to help a bit with the parking, please message me and I'll add you to the list of parking volunteers.

I'm quite happy to continue my role as club liaison with Mr. P.  I am still offering my 2 guest rooms (plus porch for Jon) for anyone that wants to stay here, but I won't have time to stay at the CISO tent.  I'm assuming Gareth and & Yvonne want 1 room (please confirm) and the other room is open.  Also the lawn is available for camping as always, though no one has ever taken us up on our offer.

I need to know before I contact Mr P - is the club still planning on coming out?  If so, I will request the usual spot.  If not, I need to let him know ASAP as the parking committee meets soon.

I only have 1 confirmed RSVP (Jon).  Anyone else??

Pls let me know an approximate nose count and I’ll pass it along to the parking committee.  I can park and leave the Eldo there too.

I'm undecided at this point. My Fleetwood is a mess after being rear ended last year. It won't be ready by then.
I'll be bringing my 93 if I have everything fixed on by then.

It's on the calendar, I just need to figure out what time I can head out on Friday.

I've been texting with Steve.  CISO can have the usual spot.  Will there be someone to set up the lines on the Friday.  Mr. P want to know.  If they can't be set up, he can't guarantee the space will be there on Saturday.

 Excellent!  thumbs up

Gareth said he will be there to set up on Friday. I can't make it on Friday, I have to work that day.

I may be able to skip town early enough to help. What time do we have to be finished by?

Usually 3.  If it changes, I'll post it.

I have the red cord that goes through the posts I returned to Gareth.  I'll bring it out on the Friday.

I'm still sitting on the fence... Because of my work schedule, I have to work Friday. And it will be too crowded Saturday. So I'll likely come on Sunday. Then I can get up early and be there at a decent time.

I'm getting my 93 out of storage tomorrow. It's going to need some work. I don't know if it will be ready by then. If it is I might come on the Saturday only as I havent booked any extra time off work.

You need someone to show up Friday afternoon to set up the lines.  If there are no lines by 1 p.m. on Friday, CISO can't have it's spot on Saturday.

The poster rolling party/pizza party was last night and I confirmed with Steve that CISO has it's regular place.  If none of you can bring the stakes, I'll let him know the space is open for another group.

If I haven't heard by tomorrow evening, I'll tell our parking committee they can include the space.  (BTW, I'm part of the parking committee).  Up to you guys.

The show is the same weekend every year, so it's not like it snuck up on you.  I've been in contact with Steve since February to assure the CISO spot.  If people are serious about attending, they should be prepared well in advance.  I've done my part.  Up to you guys to do yours.

There is no way I can be there on Friday. I have to work from 1-11PM. No way I can get out of it. I don't have the flexibility that some have. If no one can be there to set up the lines, then you'll have to let it go.

I have been there every year to set up when my schedule permits. I'll have to talk to Gareth again about it. He's getting his '93 out tomorrow, so he will have a car. That was the stalling point with him.

And don't say that it just snuck up on me.  It always seems to be the same small group that does anything. I would be nice to be able to rely on other members when one or more of us can't be there. It seems to be the same way in every club. I appreciate what you do, Sam. And you did your part. This was one thing that I always did until Steve went on that tirade with me a few years ago. That's what killed it for me. I originally set it up with Steve to have that spot, and it was good until then.

I'll be getting my 93 out today but it will need work.
I don't know if I can have it ready by then.
If I don't make it then this will be the first year I have not attended this show.
I won't be off work until 10 AM that Friday.
I also appreciate your efforts Sam but I cant always be there for the club 100% of the time.
Someone else will have to pick up the slack this year.
It would be a shame to let it go.

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons here.
For me to get across Toronto, grab the lines+posts+sign+tent from someone, setup and be done by 1pm I'd be hitting peak morning traffic.  I can do that, but I wonder what cars I'd be roping off for? I would have my car, and Sam's Eldo. Ron's Eldo is a possibility. It would suck to rope off a section only have it not being used, that would look worse in Steve's eyes. For me, the club is a social thing and the cars are the common ground. My kids were disappointed when they found out I'd have to miss the yearly fun fair that the school puts on which happens to be Friday. Since no one else is going to be around Friday then I'd feel like a pretty $hitty dad to skip their event to be sitting by myself waiting for a car show to start. If we decide against setting up a spot on Friday than I can attend the kids fun fair and head down Friday evening. That's my vote.

 -uh-

No one stepped up.  The area will be open to another club, or anyone else that gets there 1st.  Friday parking/set up is by invitation only, so pls don't park your car there on Friday and expect it to be there Saturday morning if it hasn't been pre approved by Steve and the parking committee.  I say this sadly.  I was hoping that someone (anyone) who normally doesn't help out and just shows up to a nice saved area in the FCCI would step forward.

We are a virtual group of Cadillac enthusiasts.  We help each other over the net with car problems.  We are not a club.  Which is fine.  Just time to say it out loud.

Personally, I have been somewhat disappointed with the outcome. Not only for this event, but for the club in general. Some have given a lot, others have not. I have tried, but as of late I have had many irons in the fire.

As you all know, it was my original intent to get the club started, then have others take over and move it forward. But as it, it seems things have stagnated. Well, so be it.

If the club remains for now as a virtual club, then it will be so until maybe someone comes along to move it forward. I no longer have the time, or the enthusiasm to do it.

Also, I will not be attending the show this year. And chances are, no time in the future either.

I had planned on going to London this coming weekend but I'll have to pass. Something has come up here that needs my attention.
I was looking forward to it this year because I missed last year at London and also the club's show in Kitchener.
I hope that those of you who do go to London have a great time. I'll see you all in Kitchener in September.

Sorry about that. It shows to go ya that when you're retired the days go by quickly because there are no weekends to look forward to
and the days have no numbers anymore so it's very easy to forget the date. I haven't looked at the event calender in Old Autos for
anything yet this year either. I guess it's a good thing that I posted that this morning. If I had been able to I would have gone to
London for nothing.

 Who did go? Anyone?

I had to stay back because a routine cavity filling turned in to an emergency root canal with infection. I didn't have any symptoms or issues but was warned they could pop up at any time.

Bill Wells was there as were a number of caddies I've seen in the past and have parked with us over the last few years.  Names escape me, but I always recognize cars.  People remembered me (or maybe my hat ;) and we had some nice conversations.

Amphi cars were running again for charity.  The dancing tractors were back!!  I can't even think how many hours of practice go into making square dancing with tractors look easy and fun.

The friday night before the show, Steve held a cocktail party to meet and greet with the celebs and some of the long time volunteers that help make the show run smoothly.  I met Gene Winfield (90 and still doing body work demos at the FCCI show!) and the guys from Vegas Rat Rods, as well as a few local celebs.  Dress was casual (jeans & Ts were fine) so everyone was comfortable.  It was held in the Salon, and because it was a lovely evening spilled out onto the lawn.

Because our local club as been in charge of parking for the last few years, things were much smoother and the lines to get in on Saturday were limited to only a few minutes wait at worst.  We've got a system worked out, and as shown on Saturday, worked very well.

The Oldsmobile Club had a display area this year.  That was a nice change and fun to see them all grouped together.

Finally car count not in yet.  I'll update when I find out.  Show was huge, tho, as we did need the back 40 acres.

The weather was certainly great for the event. I expected there would be a huge turnout, as there always is. By any measure it's one of the great car shows in the world today, and it takes a huge amount of effort and organisation to pull it off. Like you say, things get refined over the years so they become easier and work better. Hats off to all the volunteers that make it happen. The Friday night event would have been a lot of fun.

No doubt some of the Cadillac owners were looking for that spot. We do seem to gravitate to one another.
