 Clarke St. Cadillac Plant

 Mike
MIKE!  My older sister used to live about one mile from the Clarke St. Cadillac plant.  I use to go there from time to time when I was a kid.  My parents use to visit Detroit every year and of course I had to go along too, but I enjoyed it very much. When I got married I took my whole family there too every year to visit my dear sister; Detroit was very interesting with so many factories, etc. My nephews all worked for GM and Ford; they took me on many visits to these plants while in production.  EAM

I think they were clearing the trunk for moving the plant. You can see the plant in the trunk and the shovel on the ground. They probably wanted to lay a tarp down flat.

We can't see all the grills, but most are the fine egg-crate design used for the 1981, 1987, and 1988 model years.  The formal roof option was first offered in '88 (then became standard for 1990-92).  I wonder if some of those colours were discontinued for '89.

Could be close!  Code 57 was renamed from Dark Chestnut Firemist in 1987 (one year only?) to Light Beechwood in 1988-89, so there might be a difference in shade, perhaps a bit lighter.

Is the Burlwood Brown offered in 1985-86 the colour of Jon's '85 or is it another paint code?  If it's the same Code 57, it would be a dramatic change over just 3 years.

RON

There's not enough visual info to narrow down the model year of that 1979-85 Eldorado.  That may well be a GTO!  And to its left, is that an 1987-88 Allante?  There's also a 1974-76 Coupe DeVille amongst the Broughams.

The last time I saw multiple rows of new Broughams was at Slessor Motors in Newmarket, during the summer of 1988.

I'll have to check.  The repaint made it a little lighter than the original,  but not all that much.  I don't see the Burlwood Brown with Firemist on your list. But my car did/does have the firemist.

I'm trying to figure out why there's a boat in the showroom.

It's possible that the boat was taken in as part of a trade deal on a new car.
When I was doing the vinyl repair thing I got to see what some dealers would take in on trade. If the boat was
really nice it would make sense to put it in the showroom for resale rather than leaving it outside exposed to
the elements, possible vandalism or even theft.

Most if not all of the spilled liquid shown in the video of the crash site may be battery acid.  It's so unusual to see a crash scene without thousands of pieces of debris scattered about.  Who says old cars don't have crumple zones?  One report indicates the 87 year old driver is recovering in hospital from a broken neck vertebra.  They ought to throw the book at the Ford Pickup driver who caused this collision.

Convertible top fabric?

Title: Re: Vintage Cadillac Pictures
Post by: guidematic on March 31, 2017, 10:41:29 AM

Back then, and just previous to that, coach built cars commonly had leather covered roofs. This was a prestigious item to have on your car. It mimicked those coach built cars and put your car in a somewhat exclusive class. It wasn't common at all through the 50's. But it was there.

Starting in 1957 or 1958, Cadillac offered a fabric covered top on the Eldorado Seville, then made it standard and optional on the Fleetwood Sixty Special. The trend then just took off in the 60's and lasted through the 90's.

 Mike

Title: Re: Vintage Cadillac Pictures
Post by: RONNIE on April 01, 2017, 08:49:07 AM
More than likely that is convertible top fabric. Back in the 90's I did a lot of fabric top repairs, mostly vinyl, but the odd
car came along with something different. I had a dealer that dealt exclusively in cars that he brought here from the
southern US. One car I did was a black and gold '85 Seville. The top was covered with black after market convertible top
material. While I only had to do some dash pad and armrest repairs the top, being what it was, was in perfect condition.
Most of his other cars had vinyl tops that needed a repair of some sort or at least a redye job because of the southern sun.
It just sucks the life of vinyl.
I still see the odd late model car with US plates sporting an after market vinyl top. If it's done properly and in good taste
it can really enhance a car's appearance.

Blacks were big purchasers of Cadillacs, but in the 30's it was near impossible for a black man to purchase one. They had to hire an agent to do it for them. Cadillac, still in the depths of the depression, noticed this, and allowed a black man to enter the dealer and purchase on his own. I no doubt help their sales.

When I was a kid I actually saw one of those campers. It was on a family trip out west and we were in Banff Alberta.
I don't remember much about it other than it was a pretty cool rig. One thing I do remember about Banff was when
we were getting gas. Off to one side of the station's lot was a mid '50's Cadillac sedan with it's front end smushed up
to the windshield. They said the car had struck a moose at night on the highway. We also saw a VW bug that suffered
the same fate but unfortunately the bug's occupants were just a smushed as the bug was.

Title: Re: Vintage Cadillac Pictures
Post by: RONNIE on January 12, 2018, 07:05:25 AM
It is a bug screen. They were ugly to look at but they did their job keeping bugs from building up on your car's radiator.
When I was a kid we did a lot of road trips out west to visit family and we had one on Dad's '56 Studebaker Champion.
Driving the prairies in Alberta and Saskatchewan the screen would become clogged with big bugs like grasshoppers.
Most folks who lived there didn't bother using them but would put small pieces of window screen behind the car's grille
to protect the radiator and would change the screen when necessary. The bugs came with the territory and if you lived
on a farm or a ranch the windshield and front of your car and pickup truck were covered with dead bugs and you were
constantly cleaning them off.
These days car washes out there have an extra service for when you get your car washed. The front is sprayed with a
liquid cleaner that will dissolve the bug build up and they come right off during the wash cycle.

Yep, that's what it is. Look at how it's perfectly formed to the contours of the bumper.

The best way to clean bugs off the front of your car is to spray it with WD-40. Let it sit for 20 minuites and they come right off with a garden hose.
I did this years ago when my Caprice had a grille full of butterflies.

WD-40 is a very useful product, but it fails miserably as a penetrating oil, what it's mostly marketed as.

After looking at that lunch bucket I don't think that was his car. Back in '48 he was probably getting paid $1.25 hour in a factory, hardly a wage
to be able to buy a car like that. My father in the mid 50's was paid $2 an hour when he worked at Studebaker and he struggled to pay of his
'56 Studebaker Champion.

Looks like a 1947 model - had to search around to see that '46s had one more horizontal element in the grill!

The photo may have been taken a few years after production.  How much would a '47 be worth in the early '50s?

He is no doubt proud of that car. Being it's new or late model used. Cadillacs were the epitome of achievement, and Johnny Lunch Bucket certainly worked hard for that achievement. Cadillacs held their value then, so a 3 year old used Cadillac held much of their original resale value. That's why that once you bought your way into ownership, keeping in the Cadillac camp was actually economical. More so that buying a lesser car.

Convoy experimented with many forms of car hauler, some very unique, some downright bizarre. Note the tractor, a Ford C-Series. This is the first year they were sold, 1957. They would remain in production until the  1990's.

I like white cars. The paint doesn't oxidize like other colours and you can wax them in direct sunlight.
They don't show dirt either.
