Title: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: 57chevyowner on April 18, 2015, 08:55:22 PM
Hi Everyone - it's that time of year again   whoo/hoo  The 1st weekend of June is the FCCI on Steve Plunkett's estate.  Last year, on Saturday alone, there were over 4500 (yes, you read that right!) cars entered into the show.  Here's the link http://www.fleetwoodcountrycruizein.com/  Any of our new members should make it a point to attend this show.  There's no other show (parked) like this on grass anywhere else in Ontario that I'm aware of.  Because Steve collects Cadillacs (hence the name of his property is Fleetwood) he has a soft spot for our club, and we of one of only a select few allowed to set up the day before the show starts.  When you see the magnitude of this show with your own eyes, you will appreciate the huge advantage this gives our club.

Mike has asked me to co-ordinate this year's event as I live less than 20 minutes from Steve.  I've been in contact with Mr. P., and we're back at our usual spot near the north bridge on the east side.  Set up is June 5th, and we need to be gone by 3 p.m.  And he means 3 p.m., so if you can't come out Friday on time, you'll need to let us know you will definitely be there on Saturday and/or Sunday, and we'll rope off the appropriate area we require.

Last year we discussed putting the club banner up on poles rather than hanging from our tents, which blocks the view both onto the show, and shields us from people that might feel intimidated to approach us and join our group.  Several members had good ideas of how to build the banner holder - but I don't know if anyone actually created one.  Please contact me if you have made one, and if no one gets back to me, I'll start contacting you <g>  I don't have the skills needed to build it, or I'd do it myself.  I have the club tents in my toybox.  As with any car show, bring your own chair(s).

There is plenty of food etc. for sale on site, but the lineups can be long.  It's probably best to bring your own food/drink and PLEASE, no open drinking of alcohol.  This is a family oriented show, and there will be a lot of children poking here and there, and usually lots of questions.

I have 2 guest rooms available - one with a queen bed, and one with a single that opens to a king.  First 2 parties to contact me can have these rooms. We also have a large area on site you can camp on if you have a tent (we call it our front lawn, city folk beg to differ - it's about 1/4 acre in area).  Please don't pee in the pond.  The bass don't like it - and we like our bass.  Bring your own poles if you wish to fish for your dinner (that's why you DON'T pee in the pond).

Any questions or concerns or suggestions?  Please post and I'll do my best to answer/help out.

I'm just hoping my Eldo is ready for the show.  Steve said he dropped by to see how his car was coming along, and told me mine looks like a show piece     Can't wait to see her.

I have great anticipations as well! I bet she looks brand new when done. Still a month and a half, so still time to get her all sewed up!

I hope that I can get my '70 in good enough shape to make the trip this year. After sitting 3 years, a fair bit needs to be done.

Good job Sam.
As always I'll be there Friday to help set up.

So where do the bass pee?

I looked at my work schedule for that week. I have to work Friday, but I'm off Saturday through Monday. So I won't be able to get there Friday, and not early enough on Saturday. I will be able to make the trip on Sunday.

I couldn't get any holidays around that weekend either. Even though my seniority is getting up there, those days were already gone.

Hmm, good question.  I'll apply for a government grant, set up a study, then sit by the pond all summer collecting data   =rofl=

Who is staying where in London ? I think I might stay over for just Friday and Saturday this year instead of the full 3 days. I want to do the Unfinished
Nationals at the Paris Fairgrounds on Sunday like I do every year.
I'm not too happy with how the show dates are laid out this year. Many of them, at least the ones I like to do, coincide with other good shows happening
the same day which is unusual. This year I have to pick and choose my cruises, something I haven't had to do before.
I don't want to stay where I stayed last year so if someone will let me know where they are staying I'll book there.

Ok Gareth - you and Yvonne have the room with the extended length queen.  You 2 and Joe get to share a bathroom - we have an ensuite.  If either of you is allergic to cats, bring your own anti-histamine.

We still have lawn room; and/or if you have a portable air bed type thing, we have plenty of room in both the finished and unfinished portions of the lower level.  It has a 1/2 bath, so you don't have to navigate steps in the dark.

Joe, that plain sucks.   censored/

I was at the monthly meeting of the Strathroy-Caradoc cruisers tonight.  Our club handles the parking at FCCI.  I spoke with the Pres. about some members not arriving at 0 dark thirty, but that we marked off the area the night before, and had places saved....but the parking people (our club) told us we couldn't turn left to get to our area and we had to hassle with the parking crew to get to our spots.  The lead parking guy has never heard of our CISO group.  He didn't know we had assigned parking near the bridge.  I explained I'm liason for the CISO club this summer.  After talking a bit, we decided:

a) Bryan will tell all parking attendants that we (CISO) have assigned, saved parking.
b) CISO will create a "pass" that each member can print off and present to the attendant, bypassing all arguments.

Joe, I think you're the go-to guy for designing a parking pass.  It simply has to show our club logo, and "Member 2015".  I'll print off a bunch for the parking people to refer to so there's no mistakes.  Simply e-mail the pdf or jpg to the members, and we can print our own.

Bryan STRESSED out by 3 on Friday.  Also, they are hoping to close the bridge near us to only foot traffic.  I cannot emphasize enough that this mean entering by the east gate ONLY.  If you enter the west gate, the pass won't help as you won't be able to cross the bridge; and turning around and exiting will not be allowed til noon.

Each year we get better organized...and each year the FCCI show expands geometrically.  For those that can't attend this year's show, the same venue (with far fewer cars) is open every thursday afternoon for the local Lion's sponsored cruise-in.

CYA all soon   $sun$

It does suck. :(

Here's a pdf of a 3 up parking pass on regular letter sized paper.

I added another version of the same pass that will use up a lot less ink. Inkjet printer ink costs more than gold.

Good idea.  I could almost hear my printer making sucking sounds trying to suck the black ink out of it's cartridge. I have a Brother MFC-J625 DW
printer. When I bought it I didn't know it would have such a thirst for ink. I couldn't figure out why I was going through so much coloured ink when
I don't print stuff in colour that often. Staples told me that Brother cartridges are a wee bit smaller and that even when thinking you are using just
black it's actually using up the colours at the same time. In February I put in 4 new cartridges. My black is now empty and the colours are half full.
If I had to buy fresh new cartridges all the time I would be pretty ticked off about it but I get them refilled at the local Island Ink Jet store for about
$9.00 each. It's not right but I can live with it.
The parking passes I ran off are rather large, 8 1/4" x 3 1/2". Are they supposed to be that big ?

I think to make the stand I will buy two concrete deck blocks... those pyramid shaped things. Stick two small 4x4's in the square hole. Drill some vertical holes in the 4x4s and put some conduit in them. Drill a few holes in the conduit to hang the banner. Sound reasonable?

How tall should it be?

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: 57chevyowner on May 10, 2015, 01:29:52 PM
I'm guessing the banner is ~2 ft high, so if that assumption is correct, top of the pole should be 8-9' above the ground, allowing people (alright, most people) to walk underneath and view the car(s) it's over.

Sound reasonable?  Can you create the poles in 2 sections (5 ft ish) so that they fit the backseat of the car?  If not, I'll come down with the truck to pick them up.

Thank you
Sam

283 with the Power Pack. That means a 4 barrel carb and dual exhausts. Good for 225 HP.

Closer to 280 from what I've been told - it's "supposed" to be a 283/283 (cubic " = hp) but I've never had it tested   =rofl=

Wasn't the 283 from that era fuel injected?

I'm believe my old dog would be faster accelerating than those hobbled by smog control engines. Even with the advantage of a higher revving engine. It would be interesting to see.

I can attest to the acceleration of the Joe's '38.  I've been a passenger several times and when he dumps it you're practically pinned to the seat back.
There was no tire smokin' burn out, not even a wee little chirp of rubber, just power. That really surprised me coming from a 77 year old car.

RON

It's even better this year. Some miles on the engine now. Oil consumption has gone WAYY down and power has increased noticeably. To the point where it can sometimes chirp the tires a bit off the line. I have to be careful with my rear end with those line starts. Where the real power difference seems to be is from about 40-60mph. I think that's the highest torque band for 3rd gear.

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: guidematic on May 11, 2015, 07:39:31 AM

There were several 283's available in 1957. The base engine with the 2 barrel carb was 185 HP when paired with the Powerglide. With manual shift it was 165 HP. Add the 4 barrel carb, dual exhausts and you got 220 HP. Add another 4 barrel carb and it went to 245 HP. With the Dontov cam, power went to 270 HP.

There were a pair of fuel injected 283 cid engines. The "base" engine had 250 HP, and with the Duntov cam it went to the hallowed 283 HP. The 270 and 283 HP engines were not available with the Powerglide.

The standard V-8 for 1957 was still the 162 HP 265, the last year for this engine and it was available only with the manual transmission. And of coarse, the 6 cylinder 235 cid engine that was making a solid 140 HP.

So my guess of 250 wasn't far off the mark.  220 is respectable against most cars on the road today.  Colour me happy  -yes-

The major qualifier here is the way the power was rated then and now.

In those days, the engines were hooked to a dyno and run for maximum power. They did not have any accessories, air cleaners or exhausts bolted to the engine. This is called Gross Horsepower.

Starting in the early 70's, the way power was measured changed. Power was measured in an "as installed" state. Meaning that the engine had accessories, intake and exhaust systems installed. This was called Net Horsepower. The ratings were understandably lower. This was also right at the beginning of the emissions, so the measured drop was dramatic. But looking at GM in 1971 you could compare apples to apples and see the difference in the ratings systems. One other thing was starting in 1971 all GM engines had lowered compression ratios to allow for low and no lead gasolines that were beginning to be available at the time.

For example, the Chevrolet LS-5 454 was rated at 390 HP in 1970 with the 10.25:1 compression. In 1971, the same engine was rated at 365 HP with an 8.5:1 compression ratio. The same engine in net power was 285 HP. A perceived drop of 80 HP.

A common mistake is to compare older engines with Gross ratings with newer engines with Net ratings. Clearly an apples to oranges comparison. In 1971, the closest engine to 220 HP in the Chevrolet line up was the 307. It was rated at 200 gross HP, and a mere 140 net HP. These gross figures would fall lower and lower until the advent of EFI in the 80's. We would then see a gradual increase of power levels up to what we have today.

Hence why my 135hp has a chance.

Right. Power outputs are closer than the numbers would make them appear. You can see that by the old measurement, the HT4100 was actually pretty efficient in a specific output way. Plus they can get some remarkable fuel economy.

 Mike

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: KevinW on May 11, 2015, 12:02:25 PM
Stock for stock, I think the HT4100 would have a higher HP peak output than the flat-head.   Isn't it normal to increase the compression ratio when flat-heads are rebuilt?  Maybe a few tricks in the valve work too. :)  There are also numerous tuning and wear variables.  It'll be close - Could be *THE* match of 2015!!

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: HavanaJoe on May 12, 2015, 08:15:49 AM
Also a big difference in the efficiency of the automatic vs manual transmissions. I wonder how much power is lost in those torque converters they put in those caddies.

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: guidematic on May 12, 2015, 08:30:12 AM

The torque multiplication at lower speeds would negate any benefits of a manual when the engine has been specifically tuned for an automatic. Then the 200 4R will lock up the converter in high gear and eliminate any slippage and inefficiencies.

 Mike

Title: Re: FCCI - Fleetwood Country Cruise in
Post by: KevinW on May 12, 2015, 08:41:15 AM
The torque converter allows the engine to reach a level of higher output more quickly (mainly at the bottom of each gear).  Overall loss would be under 5% based on typical values.  The lock-up converters are not typically applied in a 1/4 race scenario on production cars, but Jon could add a switch to lock it on demand in the 3000-4000 RPM range, and release it in time for the bottom of the next gear to take advantage of the best of both. :)

My printer doesn't sit idle for more than day or two, besides it has an automatic cleaning cycle. Sometimes it will clean itself in the middle of the night
and the noise wakes me up. It does automatic updates during the night too. We'll leave it in idle mode and it's not the way we left it the night before.
It's almost like it has a mind of it's own or it's haunted.

Good news, for me anyway. Next weekend my grandson, a junior car guy, will be with me, something I've been waiting for for 7 years. He's old enough now
where he can have fun doing something different than playgrounds and video games. I'm sure he'll get a kick out of the amphicars and the square dancing
tractors etc.
Evan has a PD day from school next Friday so my daughter will bring him from Orangeville to Brampton where I'll pick him up then we will take to 401 to
London. I will still be there to help set up in the early afternoon.

Should we use those parking passes Joe designed and posted ?

At just 7 Evan is still too young to know much about cars and such and like most boys his age is attracted by anything mechanical. He seems to show
a real interest in the stuff he looks at and will ask questions so that's a good beginning I guess. He isn't interested in anything specific yet but I'm sure
that will change as he gets older.

Hi Ron

The parking passes are only needed on the Saturday to allow us to turn left past the pond to our usual spot.  If you don't have a pass, you will be directed to the back 40.  I'm part of the parking group - so you know someone who knows someone  mis/chief

Are you staying here Friday night?  If so, great.  If not, we have a single that opens to a king is someone wants/needs.  And as always, there's room on the front lawn for tents and trailers.

FRIDAY SET UP

I plan to be on site @ 11 a.m. with the tents.  I hope Joe has finished the banner supports (HEY JOE??)  I believe Gareth is bringing the rest of the required materials (Gareth??)  We MUST be OFF SITE by 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.  No excuses.  Steve has a private dinner party planned for Friday night and the rest of us are cordially NOT invited.  Be sure to enter at the east gate both days to get to the CISO area.  We are planning on closing the bridge to car traffic to allow easier access to foot traffic.  Last year on the Saturday over 4500 cars were in the show and thousands more parked nearby to walk in and see the show.  We are very fortunate to be allowed an assigned space and early entry.  Please remember that.

For those of you attending for the 1st time I suggest you do a google map search to find your best route to the east entrance.  It's on Elviage road in Lambeth, Ontario, just west of Byron.  It's best to bring your own food and beverages as the lines are long and people get cranky.

See you on the weekend   $sun$

Looks like I will not be there this year. I have to get going on getting Lucille out and getting work done on her. Money and time spent doing the show is better used for the much needed repairs on Lucille. I have to prioritize on that this year. So I don't plan on attending any shows at all, but concentrating on what needs to be done on the cars.

Money and time is in short supply for me, so I have to concentrate on the reason why I am in the club in the first place. The cars.

I was there for a few hours on Friday with my grandson Evan. We passed on the BBQ at Sam's. Evan wanted to get in the motel's pool so that's what we did.
Saturday was a really awesome day weather wise and Evan had a thoroughly fun day. For him the amphicar ride made his day as did the dancing tractors.

This year the Super 8 motel was tolerable at best and will be the last time I stay there. The entire motel is just as old and shabby as it was 3 years ago.
I doubt there is any building maintenance or housekeeping staff working there.  The stairwells were very dirty, hall carpets held together with duct tape,
burnt out light bulbs, dirty window glass. One wall in our room had some small holes from having a second headboard fastened to it. Instead of fixing the
holes pieces of a plastic bag were stuffed in them. The bathroom hair dryer was hanging loose on the wall and could fall off into a sink full of water.
When we checked in the room was clean but housekeeping neglected to leave soap, shampoo and towels. The toilet paper holders were empty as was the
Kleenex box. At least the TV worked and the bed was fresh and comfy and the $53 cost was good. Like the man said "you get what you paid for".
You would think that something that is part of the Wyndom hotel chain would be kept in better condition than this Super 8 was. The only thing I can
think of is that this motel is a franchise operation and the owner is barely holding onto it.

I got home from the show a little after 4 p.m. today.  Saturday set yet another new attendance record - an estimated 5500 cars entered the show!  It is now easily Canada's largest outdoor car show...and it's in my "backyard" so to speak.

The parking committee (of which I am a part) had a MUCH better handle on things this year.  Elviage Rd was closed to all except classic cars and cars with handicap stickers.  All other cars were steered towards the parking areas (new this year).  The parking committee did a walk through the week before the show and painted out lines so that on Saturday/Sunday, no one had to guess where to park.  The club passes worked perfectly, and we were allowed to get to our area with no fuss or long explanations.  We pulled in a few non-club "stray" caddies to join our group of cars; I think we had 11 cars both days.   $sun$

I am sunburned and exhausted but also smiling ear to ear.  The helicopters were annoying; but other than that, it was a great show with lots of spectators.  I saw many friends (old and new) and walked my feet off.  And of course, it didn't rain, which makes things better all around.

Oh, and I have a new club title (because our club is just SO hung up on titles and politics).  I am now (wait for it...)  "keeper of the stuff" for CISO   =rofl=

I'm glad to hear that it was a huge success!

I know Motel 8 is a $hit hole. I was less than happy with them when I was there 3 years ago. It seems I have had a bad experience with hotels there every year except one. I have a bad taste in my mouth now for any hotel stay.

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the show and the display.

And how did the after hours get togethers go?

I got home around 5 PM and promptly had a couple of beers.
It was an exhausting weekend, but it was the best time I've had at the cruize in.
We got a lot of attention and we should have some new members soon.
Sorry but I hardly touched my camera as I was very busy talking to people and just wanted to take a break from photography as it does take up a lot of time.
Sam, thanks again for your hospitality. You and Bruce are great people.
I was lucky enough to talk to Dennis Gage. He really is a nice guy and before I left I bumped into Paul from the Guild of Automotive Restorers when I was trying to help a guy in a Camaro get out of the sand trap.
He jumped right and helped get the car out on short order.
The quality of the cars there was amazing, there was more than enough to satisfy everyone's interest.

Yes. Evan and I are pretty close. He's my little buddy and we get along well. Fleetwood was actually the 2nd cruise we've been went to. Last year we also
went to Paris. I had forgotten about that one but he didn't.
Sometimes he can be a little PIA but I think that's because I tend to spoil him when we're together. I know I shouldn't do that but I do. I constantly hear
him asking me to buy something, usually a toy of some sort and it's hard to say no even though the price is more than what the item is really worth.
Saturday Morning we were in a McDonalds and this old guy gave Evan a nice new shiny Loonie then later in the day he found a quarter on the ground
by the Auto Salon and he was dying to spend that $1.25 on something. We were in the indoor exhibit barn and he spotted a box full of tiny little airplanes
worth maybe 50 cents each but with an asking price if $3.00 each, clearly a rip off. I tried to explain to him that they were too expensive and not worth
$3.00 and we left. We went through that barn a several times during the day and he kept going back to those stupid airplanes and I kept saying "NO" until
the tears started welling up in his eyes so the sucker in me gave in and I ponied up the difference. Grandkids can surely be little money pits but I love it.

Next year I'm going for the 2 days again (and solo) unless something conflicts with it like Paris did this year.

Who is the owner of the dark blue Eldorado with the new vinyl top ? I assume he is a club member but I don't know for sure. I heard his name but can't
remember what it was however I believe he lives in Chatham. I want to get in touch with him.
Last Saturday he and I were talking about my colouring one of my Eldorado dash pads for his car.

His name is Brad, he lives in St. Thomas.
I think Sam may know how to get a hold of him.

I received a response from Super 8's head office this morning and they were very apologetic about my stay there last week. They said everything I noted
will be addressed and taken care of so I will be staying there again next year. They offered me one free night in one of their NEW upgraded rooms which
I accepted and I'll pay for the second night myself. I'm good with that, I just hope they don't disappoint.

Cool! I guess sometimes you just have to lodge a complaint. Maybe I should have done that on my last stay. No shower and no coffee in the morning makes for a rough start.

When Pam and I travel by car we aren't fussy about where we stay overnight. As long as the place is clean, comfortable and in good repair we're happy.
We've stayed in dozens of motels over the years and with the exception one place we stayed at on our honeymoon, almost 50 years ago, the London
Super 8 is the worst.

If you don't complain about something you're not happy with the problems don't get taken care of. As long as you are civil in posting a complaint most
companies will bend over backwards to keep a customer happy and coming back.
